Visit-Montenegro.com: Off to the Top of the World

Montenegrin Alpine Team heading for Nepal

Podgorica – The aircraft with five-member expedition took off from the airport in Podgorica to Belgrade yesterday. Our team sets off for Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, and their quest is to conquer Mount Everest.

The alpine team consists of experienced mountaineers: Djordjije Vujicic, Dusan Vujic, Marko Blecic, Dragutin Vujovic and Ivan Lakovic.

These mountaineers are members of Niksic-based Mountaineering club “Javorak”, except for Lakovic who is a member of “Outdoor Club Podgorica”.

After trainings on the highest European and South-American mountains and climbing Aconcagua and Mont Blanc, they are heading for the ‘Top of the World’ on 8.848 meters.

- The Mountaineering Association of Montenegro has chosen us to represent the national team for this quest. We accomplished everything we planned thus far, and I don’t see any reason why would this mission be different. Mount Everest expedition is extraordinary in comparison to any other expedition. It will take 70 days, whereof 45 days will be spent climbing. – said Vujovic adding that “this is maybe the most difficult task but not the impossible one.”

The Montenegrin Olympic Committee, the Municipality of Niksic, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Media have provided the necessary financial support, and the team certainly doesn’t lack ‘steel will’.

Vujovic said that this is “a big step for mountaineers since none Montenegrin has yet set foot on Mount Everest.”

The team leader is Dragan Jacimovic who is the first man from Serbia to climb Mount Everest. The ascent of the top of the world occurred on May 16, 2000. Jacimovic will coordinate the entire expedition and be stationed at the base camp.

The return of the expedition is expected in two months, on June 8th.
