Visit-Montenegro.com: Hawaii still secluded

Quest for a new owner of Sveti Nikola Island is still underway: “Prva Banka” waits its stroke of luck to sell Sveti Nikola Island. There were some interested parties in leasing beaches on the southern part of the island but nobody was interested in the beach on the eastern part- Hawaii. No sooner than tourists tame the wild beauty of the island inhabited by fallow deer – these animals will enjoy natural resources without being disturbed.

Budva – While “Prva Banka” waits its stroke of luck to sell Sveti Nikola Island, its western and the most attractive part - the artificial beach almost 400 meters long - is left unused for seven years already.

Namely, after the businessman from Belgrade Nenad Djordjevic in 2002 connected two small rocky islands with the big island thus making 500 meters long and almost 50 meters wide beach the privilege to use it was granted to a few. This whole project was disapproved by the citizens of Budva. The part of the island owned by Djordjevic with newly built artificial beach consists of three small beaches about 500 meters long.

Even though he planned to build an elite beach where one could enjoy the picturesque sight and cafés and restaurants as well, and which could be approached only by boats from the city port, this idea never became a reality. Indignant over stop-work order issued by the construction inspection which even destroyed a part of one tourist object that he was building, Djordjevic forbade everyone to set foot on his property. Exactly then the agony related to the beautiful beach on the island set in. Even if the beach could host several thousand visitors it never really became bathing place. The incident from 2003 is still the talk of the town. Namely, out of spite and personal revenge directed to local and national authorities, security guards of Djordjevic forbade former Mayor of Budva and her family, who intended to spend a day on this beach, to put ashore. It was believed that this would change in 2007, when out of the blue the news reverberated powerfully that Djordjevic sold 37 000 square meters to even more controversial businessman Stanko Subotic – Cane.

Plans to build marina on the island as well as 600 meter-long pedestrian overpass which would enable tourists to reach the famous island from the Old Town, remained only a computer graphic animation.

Over last two years nobody even tried visiting this beach, perhaps because of the story that swimming is not allowed there. That’s why tourists used to visit beaches on the southern part of the island which offer a unique experience as well.

Having in mind that the quest for a new owner is still underway, it remains to be seen if this beach will be functional this season. According to local fishermen, there is a man on the island who guards the beach and facilities. For all these years, there was not a single complaint submitted to the tourism inspection that anyone was prevented from using the beach. This was confirmed by the Chief Inspector Bozo Vucekovic.

From the company “Coastal Zone Management” it is announced yesterday for “Vijesti” that there were some interested parties in leasing beaches on the southern part of the island but nobody was interested in the beach on the eastern part. Whether they are afraid from being chased off or they are simply not interested in this part of the island, one thing is for sure – nobody dares to set a foot on this part of Hawaii. By all accounts, the island will be desolated this season too, despite the fact that it is one of the most beautiful nooks of Montenegrin coast. No sooner than tourists tame the wild beauty of the island inhabited by fallow deer – these animals will enjoy natural resources without being disturbed.
