NATO membership unlikely in April

Despite its push for a membership invitation at this year’s NATO summit, Montenegro will most likely join the military alliance in the next few years, the Director of the Centre for Strategic Studies, Janusz Bugajski, says.

Speaking with local press, Bugajski said it seemed “likely” that Albania, Croatia, and Macedonia would be invited to join NATO at the April summit in Bucharest, Romania.
But, according to Bugajski, it will be important for NATO to keep the alliance’s doors open to the remaining European and Balkan countries, including Montenegro.

Asked whether the military alliance was interested in establishing a base in Montenegro, Bugajski said NATO “doesn’t require big bases”, but that it may be more interested in creating “new logistical points in southeast Europe, facilities for rotation, training and leave.”
