Slovenia ratifies Montenegro
Inching its way closer to the European Union, Montenegro had its Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) ratified by Slovenia last week, making the now EU member the second nation to endorse the document after Estonia.
The SAA, an agreement outlining a number of political, economic, trade, and human rights reforms for future candidate countries, must be ratified by the parliaments of every member in the EU bloc, a process that could take up to four years.
Montenegro signed its SAA with the EU in late 2007.
Slovenia’s signature coincided with a meeting between Montenegrin Foreign Minister Milan Rocen and his Slovene counterpart Dimitrij Rupel in Ljubljana last week.
The two statesmen finalised the details of an agreement on technical assistance for European integration, as Slovenia has made the accelerated accession of the Western Balkan countries a top priority of its ongoing EU presidency.
