Government to resolve double citizenship

Montenegro is ready to begin talks with the other former Yugoslav republics on the issue of double citizenship, Minister of Interior Jusuf Kalamperović said.

The Socialist People’s Party has drafted a proposal agreement for potential talks with Serbia, under which residents who maintain citizenship in both countries would not be required to denounce their citizenship in either Montenegro or Serbia. The citizen is considered to be exclusively a citizen of the territory they are in at the moment.

Kalamperovic said the proposed agreement would be taken into consideration in the launch of future talks to formalise a double citizenship regime.

Many Montenegrin citizens currently hold double citizenship, with Serbia, Croatia, Germany, and the United States among others.
